Jama Masjid | Great Mosque of Old Delhi

The Jama Masjid is one of the great Mosque’s of Old Delhi.  This was built between 1650 and 1656 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.  Jama Masjid can hold an astonishing 25,000 people in its courtyard and is a function Mosque which means it is closed to tourists on Friday.  Being one of the largest Mosque’s in the country the Jama Masjid is an extremely popular tourist destination. When visiting Delhi as part of any India tour this is an attraction that cannot be missed.

The Jama Masjid was built by the same empower who build the great Taj Mahal in Agra and it is known as his last great architectural contribution to India.  It was originally known as the “Mosque Commanding the View of the World” and because of the importance to the city it was an important factor when the British planned other buildings such as parliament in the city.  The Mosque has three large gates and two large minarets and multiple security watchtowers.  The building of the Mosque required 5000 workers and use of red sandstone was the primary material.  While in Delhi the Jama Masjid is an important site if you are planning an India tour and seeing all of the most popular attractions!
