If you are looking for the extreme hustle and bustle that is Delhi and India, Chandi Chowk is the place to be!  Historically this shopping distract was created in the 17th century to serve the Mughal elites close the center of power.  The bazaar was designed by the daughter of the great empower Shah Jahan and originally was divided by canals to reflect the moonlight, hence its English name “Moonlight Square”.  The canals have long been closed and the area is packed with vendors selling all types of wares.  Chandni Chowk is a must visit on any India Old Delhi city tour!

The market is very close to the Red Fort and Fatehpuri Masjid so it makes sense to include all of these areas on a single walking tour.  Chandni Chowk vendors separate themselves into the types of business they operate.  Area’s for spices, electronics, jewelry, sunglasses, weddings, books and clothing.  They even have specific area for chemical manufacturers and dealers!  If there is something you need, you can definitely find it at Chandni Chowk!

Of course, one of the biggest draws for any local or tourist to the area is the food!  Many street vendors of all types are available.  Some of the most historic and popular places to eat in Delhi have their business in Chandni Chowk.  Paranthe Wali Gali is one of the most popular places to munch down with their specialty being the North Indian delicacy of Paranthe, fried bread stuffed with different vegetables and spices.  Or if you are looking for something sweet, the Old Famous Jalebi Wala is one of the oldest restaurants in Old Delhi being established in 1884!  If you are a lover of street food there is no better place in Delhi to try different cuisine from all over this giant country.
