Victoria to India | Fly or Ferry?

The City of Victoria is the capital of British Columbia and is its second largest city.  Victoria is also the largest city on Vancouver Island which is just off the coast of the British Columbian mainland.  The fact that Victoria is on an island but also relatively close to Vancouver has a significant impact when you are looking for a cheap flight to India.  The city of Victoria does have a large Indian population, in fact the first Bains Travel location was established in this city in 1951 on Douglas Street.  Over the past few decades much of the Indo-Canadian population has moved over the mainland of the province but Victoria still has a large and thriving Indian population.

Air Canada

As with every city in Canada, Air Canada is going to the first option when looking for cheap flights to India.  In fact, because of the distance from Victoria to Vancouver Air Canada is the only option that makes sense if you fly from Victoria International Airport.  As many people opt to take the ferry to reach the much larger airport in Richmond (YVR – Vancouver International Airport) no international carriers except for Air Canada that operate to India use YYJ.  If you are flying from Victoria the shortest option currently available is about 18 hours to Delhi.  This option includes a 30-minute flight from Victoria to Vancouver and a one-hour layover before you connect the direct flight to India on Air Canada.

Ferry to Vancouver

The main way that people from Victoria actually catch their international flights is to take the ferry from Victoria to Tsawwassen and then drive to the airport in Richmond.  The ferry from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen is only about 90 minutes and then you are short drive to the airport.  Using this option is usually cheaper then flying from Victoria to Vancouver and the ferry departs every hour where finding a connecting flight might be difficult.  Once you arrive in Vancouver you can find a wide variety of cheap flights to India as it has one of the largest Indian communities in the country.  If you are looking to use the ferry make sure to give yourself ample time as ferry’s and traffic can create delays which the airline will not forgive if you miss your flight.

Overall Air Canada is really the only option that makes sense if you are flying directly out of Victoria.  The vast majority of Victoria and all Vancouver Island traffic make their way to Vancouver International Airport before they get on their flight.  When looking for a cheap flight to India from Victoria is it definitely best to look at option out of Vancouver first before finalizing any itinerary.
