Great Fares and Time To Book Your Canada to India Flight

For those who have not booked a cheap flight to India yet, you can be assured that there is still time to book for winter next year.

While many have already purchased their India flight ticket, prices are holding steady without major fluctuations up or down so those who haven’t are finding fares that are similar to previous weeks.  The share of the market is between Air India and the rest of the airlines splitting about half of the market.   Air India is now the dominant player for traffic between Canada and India as they are the only one able to provide a true direct service and they also have lower costs than  North American and European airlines.

With Air India expecting to play such a large part in Canada-to-India traffic over the next few years, it is good news that the new CEO of the organization is hoping to significantly improve service levels.

In a recent interview, Mr. Campbell Wilson stated he would like Air India to achieve standards similar to Emirates and Singapore Airlines.  While these airlines are consistently ranked the best in the world it would be a great achievement if Air India can rise to these levels.  If Air India can offer both cheap flights to India along with high levels of service it would be a significant positive change to Canada to India flight market.

While there is a long road ahead for Air India after privatization, they have a strong advantage especially from Vancouver as they are the only direct flight operating from the city.  The Vancouver to Delhi market is extremely large and with continued access to airspace that their competitors do not have they should have an advantage for years to come.  As we expect their service levels to improve significantly, they will more than likely be the carrier of choice for the next few years.

For customers leaving from Toronto to India or New Delhi for the last few weeks, the Air Canada direct service has been cheaper than Air India for winter 2023, but now that looks to have changed.  Fares on Air Canada are $3150, while Air India is now the cheaper option with prices of $2980.  While both of those carriers are expensive there are some cheaper options if you are willing to stop especially if you can travel via the U.S.  Right now, the cheapest option is through Boston using Air Canada and Turkish Airlines.  The fare on this route is only $1485, stops in both Boston and Istanbul, but at half the cost of the direct service, it is a great option.

Customers departing from Vancouver to India are using the direct flight on Air India to Delhi the vast majority of the time.  This winter you can find flights for $2850 on Air India and there is an expectation that the price will probably go up from here.

If you are looking for a cheaper option there are flights available with United and Lufthansa for only $2200 or you can drive to Seattle as there are some lower-priced options to Delhi from there, but there is the inconvenience of driving to Seattle before you get on your first flight.

Overall, there has not been any significant change in pricing or options in the past week, but as airlines continue to ramp up there is a chance that new players will enter the market and offer new services to India.  With all of the pent-up demand and some parts of the world just opening up for travel it will take a few more months for all of the players to get back to where they want to be so you can finally get access to cheap India flights.
