Lack of Capacity for Flights to India Creating Some Problems

For those passengers who are ready to buy their flight ticket to India this year, prices remain stubbornly high.  The lack of capacity in the market is due to many factors.

The booming Indian economy has allowed a new segment of society to travel internationally for the first time.

These new travellers are using the same seats that Canadians have been using for years.  In addition to these new passengers there is also an extremely high level of students entering Canada to receive their education, once again these passengers are booking the same seats which has a great impact on your ability to get a cheap flight to India.  Another factor driving prices higher is the lack of schedules and capacity via Asia.  In 2019 there were multiple airlines from China to India and none have re-started those services yet except for Cathay Pacific.  With so much demand from Chinese customers travelling back to see their families, the demand is vastly outstripping supply.  Without the needed level of flights, it will be more difficult to get a cheap flight to India.

As the world settles into the new normal for Indian traffic, we would expect prices to main high for the foreseeable future as the Indian economy continues its strong growth and students pour into Canada.

Two changes that could help lower prices in the medium term is the restart of flights from China to India, but those conversations are not happening yet.  The one item that will have an impact next year is the delivery of new aircraft to Air India.  While some of the smaller aircraft have already started to be delivered the larger planes that will have an impact on the international market will start to come online early in the new year.  The new planes will have an impact on your ability to secure a cheap India flight, but it all depends on if demand continues to outpace the supply of new planes.

Boeing and Airbus are quickly trying to upgrade their production lines to capture the increase in travel demand, but the complexity of this take will most likely mean that it will take years for these large orders to be completed.  As the planes roll off the line and are delivered to Indian carriers, it will hopefully take some pressure off the supply side allowing cheap India flights for all.

Customers who are ready to book their fall flight to India from Toronto are facing a jump in price from last week.  As both Air India and Air Canada who share most of the market have increased the price for fall tickets to New Delhi by approximately $200.  The raising of the prices shows that the demand for flights to India is huge, even at these higher fare levels.  To purchase a ticket this fall on Air India will cost around $2150, while the price on Air Canada will be $2200.  Customers who bought their India flights last week were able to pay around $2000.  As September is now only a few weeks away we expect demand to rise and prices may go up with it so now is the time to buy your cheap flight to India!

For passengers departing from Vancouver, the news is not great if you are hoping to get a cheap flight to India.  Since Air India controls most of the market they can set prices as they wish.  As demand for their flights from Vancouver is extremely high, they have raised prices by almost $400 for the early fall period.  To buy a ticket on an Air India direct flight in September will cost almost $2800.  Those who purchased last week may have felt that they paid too much, but they were able to secure a cheap flight to India.

As Indian passengers continue to hope for cheap flights, they maybe are missing out on lower prices that could now be gone.  The demand for flights to and from India from all over the world is greater than at any other point in history.  The high demand and low capacity have disrupted your ability to get a cheap ticket to India.  There may be some hope soon for lower prices, but at this point, those who booked early were able to secure a cheap flight to India.
